From the Author

My family and I had the privilege (although some would probably consider it a curse) of growing up in a small, rural community consisting mostly of mulberry trees, track housing and acres and acres of farm land. Having immigrated not only to the land of America, but into an American small town subculture, my parents found it difficult to assimilate into this slower, bigger and idiosyncratic way of living. My brother and I on the other hand, being at such a young age, welcomed the new way of living with open arms as it provided us with the means to fully utilize our new found freedom. We went to school from nine to three which in itself, consisted of four recesses and a lunch break. It was straight to the park afterwards where we’d play and explore until dinner. The days were long and nothing was trivial.

I guess you can say that ‘Brownie’ is a story about a simpler time in our lives. It was a time when we saw the magic that the world had to offer through the eyes of a stray dog that happened to find us on a summer’s afternoon. A time when there was nothing really worth worrying over and there were always second chances. However, it was also a time that was short-lived as we underwent the immense changes that come with growing up during that age.

‘Brownie’ was written as a reminder of that magical time in my childhood. More so, it serves as a reminder of the little pieces of youth inside us that cannot be taken away no matter how complicated or numb life may become.

I hope you enjoy the story.
